I knew that in order for me to ensure a good amount of content was going to be presented on the Make More Monie website, I was going to have to become a functional, if not great – or even good – typist.
To put it another way, there was no possible way I would be able to “hunt ‘n’ peck” my way through all of the (hopefully) helpful posts I was going to be writing and publishing, including this one.
As such, I was going to have to learn to do something that I should’ve taken the opportunity to get the hang of almost fifty years ago. Looks like Mr. Hofstee – my high school typing class teacher – was right after all, all the way back then, when he predicted this time would come. Sigh.
When I came to this regretful realization, and upon making the decision to gain some typing skills, I optimistically enrolled in an on-line typing tutor. Let the lessons begin!
It took me a while to develop the “digit dexterity” in my left and right hands, but all in all, it was actually an unexpectedly enjoyable experience. I relished the challenge of overcoming the habit of using only my index fingers and found a great deal of satisfaction upon doing so.
Upon being able to spread the workload further over thumbs, middle, ring and little fingers, I began the task of memorizing where each key was on the keyboard while typing. This developed the muscle memory required to ensure mind and body work seamlessly together without really thinking about it.
This is the aspect of typing that ensures accuracy, and needs to be drilled endlessly to ensure the muscle memory takes hold. Once it does, then speed can be developed, all the while maintaining accuracy.
It was during this time that the Covid pandemic – not to mention panic itself – was circling the planet. Fortunately, I was able to use the unfortunate closing of my condo high-rise gym to my advantage, effectively enabling me to kill those two birds mentioned in this post’s title with one stone, so to speak.
The gym’s closing meant I was not able to use the cardio bikes stationed there, which I’d been utilizing every other day or so for cardio fitness. This forced me to turn to the stairs, which, in a forty story tower, were a formidable adversary. Much like the typing skill and speed tests I subjected myself to online – ha!
In addition to the physical challenge, the sheer boredom of climbing these seemingly never-ending, gray-painted concrete stairwells ensured it was an exertion I didn’t look forward to. That is, until I cleverly (if I say so myself) made it work for me in an unexpected, additional way.
Through trial and error, I figured out how to incorporate each of the steps in each flight of stairs into a keyboard-related, memory-building exercise; literally putting muscle and memory into muscle memory!
Inserting a few strategically placed words for placeholders and using a rhythmic rhyme, I was able to assign each step a different key letter – in both right to left and left to right order – from each of the three letter rows of the traditional QWERTY keyboard keys. By combining an individual key memory exercise with the physical exercise of ascending and descending the stairs, I was able to pass the time on these steps far more productively, improving my keyboard typing skills and my resting pulse rate at the same time. “Look Mr. Hofstee, both hands – and no lookin’!” Another win-win, anyone?
