I cannot think of better lessons on how to “make more monie” than those demonstrated in two of Aesop’s fables; The Ant and the Grasshopper and The Tortoise and the Hare. At about 2,500 years old, the stories have certainly stood the test of time and the simple lessons in each are just as applicable in today’s First World.
In the former, the ant works hard all summer long, building a house and storing supplies in it for the oncoming winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool, mocking the ant, laughing and playing the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well-fed and the grasshopper, with no food or shelter, is left shivering out in the cold. The moral of this classic tale is simple; be responsible for yourself, don’t allow distractions to take up valuable bandwidth, think and plan ahead, then get to work.
The latter features our tortoise and hare agreeing to a race. Almost immediately, the hare leaves the tortoise behind and, supremely confident of winning, takes a nap midway through the race. When the hare awakes, he finds that the tortoise, surely moving slowly but ever steadily, has arrived before its opponent, winning the race. Just as simply and similarly, the moral Make More Monie gleans from this tale is, to take whatever willpower, strength and determination you have, focus it on the goal(s) you have set for yourself, then get to work.
Over my lifetime I have seen countless examples of those of us not applying either of these simple, yet very important lessons. Who among us hasn’t been encouraged to “save for a rainy day” or been told that “slow and steady wins the race”? Some words of advice solidly stand the test of time, because they are indeed, simply timeless.
