Don’t believe the hype you see and hear about almost anything. The world is full of deception, usually in the form of hyperbole designed to ultimately separate you from your money. It’s wise to recognize that buying into the hype that surrounds other people or the products they are pitching will almost certainly not result in your ‘fun’ancial success. In fact, doing so will likely only result in them “making more monie”.
In addition to this, it is vital for you to stay grounded and focused when others, whether it be your family, friends or frenemies, build you up with flattering but empty praise; big ups and props for really doing nothing. Apply critical thinking to all hype scenarios and distance yourself from these words.
Whether they’re referring to you or their product, remember; if they’re using words such as “awesome” or “incredible” to describe either, you’re being sold something, and it’s likely sizzle and not steak. Keep your resources, whether they are physical, emotional, intellectual or financial, where they belong – with you.
Believing the hype will cause you to – even if not revere and idolize – at least buy into those people or products that almost certainly don’t deserve it. Further to this, we may be living in an information age, but because much of it can be inaccurate, it takes a real concerted effort to determine what is worth listening to. That leaves us either trying to ignore it all – no easy feat – or fact-checking it, which takes bandwidth.
Because of this, we are also finding ourselves living in a “reputation age”, meaning that, with so many sources of information and not much time, we are letting our favorite go-to sources be our filter – to our own detriment. I say this because, they have been given this power simply because, of their influence or popularity only, not due to their having actually fact-checked anything for you.
The further problem is that even the aforementioned so-called status of these social influencers is almost assuredly suspect, as it too, can be bought rather than earned. For example, it’s no secret that Instagram followers can be purchased like any other commodity. So even Instagram influencers’ follower numbers may not really be real. They may very well be a mirage of hype.
Of course, powerhouse influencers like Kylie Jenne certainly don’t need to purchase followers to bolster their numbers. Regardless, it is far more likely than not that what they are trying to influence their followers to consume is their wares, whatever they are. Better you be self-aware instead.
In an earlier post, titled Psst… Wanna Know a Secret? There isn’t one!, I wrote about the supposed laws of attraction that get repackaged every decade or so in self-help books that fly off the shelves, purchased by those buying into this “like attracts like” pseudoscience.
You would think that the obvious inability of those saying that we can affect our lives positively or negatively, simply by thinking accordingly, to actually prove it, not to mention any number of flaws in this belief, would be enough to ensure these books never get produced in the first place. Unfortunately they do, and the worst part of them is that the concept of hard and/or smart work goes right out the window.
In this surreal world of hype and hyperbole, focus on your life rather than others’ lives. Eliminate all but your goal-related activities from your daily routine and develop a well-thought-out plan based on what success means to you and how you are going to achieve it. Chances are it involves “making more monie” and Make More Monie aspires to assist you along the way!
Note: When you have made the conscious decision to really succeed, Make More Monie will endeavor to provide you with plenty of real-world examples of individuals that have “made more monie”, and who are happy to share exactly how they did it.
